5 things freelancers can do to get paid faster
Practical steps that reduce the time between doing the work and seeing the money.
1. Invoice the moment the work is delivered
The single biggest predictor of fast payment is how quickly the invoice is sent after delivery. Invoice the same day you deliver. The client is most engaged with your work, and most motivated to pay, right when they receive it.
2. Include a card payment link on every invoice
If your invoice says "Please e-transfer to..." you're adding friction. A card payment link removes all of that. Your client clicks, enters their card number, done. It takes 30 seconds.
Invoices with payment links get paid measurably faster than those without.
3. Be explicit about the due date
"Upon receipt" and "when you have a chance" are not due dates. Write: "Payment due by June 20, 2026." Clients pay dates.
4. Send one reminder
If an invoice goes unpaid past the due date, send one friendly reminder. Most unpaid invoices are not malicious, they're forgotten. One reminder usually does it.
5. Collect a deposit on long projects
For any project that takes more than a week, require a deposit before starting. 30-50% is standard. A deposit confirms the client is committed and gives you cash flow before the project is complete.
